Discovery 2 Panhard Evolution: Early vs Later Models

Discovery 2 Panhard Evolution: Early vs Later Models

The Panhard bar is a critical suspension component that controls lateral movement of the axle. Discovery 2 owners often notice differences between early and late production models. Understanding these variations helps you choose the right replacement or upgrade for your vehicle.

Early Model Discovery 2 Panhard Bars (1998–2002)

Early Discovery 2 Panhard bars share similar dimensions with Discovery 1 and Defender variants. They use a mounting width of 44.5mm and almost the same bolt to bolt length. Although the bolt hole is larger at M16 Vs M14. RHD models feature straight hollow steel bars with pressed-in rubber bushings. LHD variants include an offset design to clear the differential.

Later Model Discovery 2 Panhard Bars (2003–2004)

Later production Panhard bars are approximately 35mm shorter between the mounting points, though they retain the same M16 mounting bolt and 44.5mm mounting width as earlier models.

The length difference stems from changes to the chassis Panhard mount location—the axle end position remains constant.

Unlike Discovery 1 and Defender models, both generations of Discovery 2 feature welded (non-removable) chassis mounts.

Benefits of Upgrading to an Adjustable HD Panhard

  • Length adjustment: When raising or lowering suspension height, the axle shifts off-centre. An adjustable bar lets you lengthen it for increased lift or shorten it for lowered setups.
  • Heim joints: Heim joints replace standard rubber bushings, delivering a tighter feel with reduced lateral movement. They're also simpler to replace—unscrew and swap rather than press out and install new bushings.
  • Stronger material: Our Panhard's use an aerospace grade 7075-T6 aluminium billet link, this provides massively increased breaking and bending resistance compared with the OEM and many other HD aftermarket alternatives.

Key Differences at a Glance

  • Length: Approximately 35mm difference between early and later models
  • Mounts: Different chassis bracket configurations

When sourcing a replacement Panhard bar for your Discovery 2, confirm your vehicle's production year to ensure correct length. Consider whether you'll need adjustability for future suspension modifications. Upgraded Panhard's will be significantly stronger for extreme off-road conditions.
